International Book Festival - Frankfurt Book Fair (FBF) 2017
From October 9th - 15th October 2017, Tn. Haji Ruslan Che Pee Chief Librarian, Perpustakaan Universiti Malaysia Pahang together with a Senior Librarian Cik Rohaida Idaris, had the opportunity to visit the Frankfurt Book Fair (FBF) at Frankfurt Trade Center. The purpose of this visit is to provide exposure on overseas international book festivals which was held annually. FBF 2017 was jointly officiated by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron with France as the FBF guest country for this year's edition.
The Frankfurt Book Fair is the largest book exhibition in the world. It is estimated that more than 7,000 publishers from all around the world participated on the 5 days event. Apart from the exhibition and sale of books, it is also serves as a platform for the publishers, the multimedia and technology companies and the content providers from around the world to collaborate and negotiate on the international publishing rights and license fees. Frankfurt Book fair is organized by Frankfurter Buchmesse GmbH, a subsidiary of the German Publishers and Booksellers Association.
Frankfurt Book Fair is quite different from the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair because it is only open and held for 5 days. The first three (3) days are solely for the purpose of negotiation and collaboration and while the last two (2) days is open to the public. Surprisingly, even though public visitors are charged per entry, this FBF still receive tremendous response and interest from the visitors either local or international. Hopefully the Librarians of Perpustakaan Universiti Malaysia Pahang will continue to visit the FBF in the future.
